NDM- essay question1

NDM- Essay question 1

feedback by Mr Halsey-
WWW- some really good points and examples ... you're already making reference to the news industry and we've barely begun the unit!

EBI- you need more focus on the question..... remember to use the wording from the question. Explore both sides of the arguments.. surely institutions have tried to limit audience power? what about quality issues? is it just an illusion of empowerment?

LR- answer the q's above

audiences have power over institutions for example when the dog was killing of in family guy, it created a mass amount of activity on social networking sites and youtube which had led to people being outraged. Through the use of social networking sites it led to FOX bringing back the character that was taken off which shows that audiences have power over institutions. however on the other hand audiences being empowered by institutions is reinforced as shows are based on what the institutions wants to shows, also the show is something that has been wanted and needed by audiences which suggests that institutions have the ability to make audiences feel a certain way depending on their actions.

Institutions

A brief history of the news

"The last 20 years have been more significant in terms of media and its role in society than the whole of the previous 200 years."

I agree with this statement to some extent i feel that since the mid 90's the internet become very popular this has led a significant rise in the amount of people using the internet. This has lead to a significant increase in citizen journalism though the likes of websites such as Youtube, Facebook , Twitter and Blogger , this had led to increase in the amount of information people have due to people tweeting about things that are happening this has led to a fall in newspapers being the leading information provide for people but are now competing heavily with online website.

New and digital media- youtube

although prank can be funny it can also become out of hand and dangerous, a well known youtuber called fousey tube makes prank videos on a regular basis. his friends had been pranked many times before and decided to get his own back, the placed a actor hiding in his new apartment as he came in he did his normal routines of turning on the lights and so on. after another friend turned the light off and the actor came out of hiding, once the light had turned on Fousey tube saw what he thought was a ghost and fainted before friends came rushing. he woke up crying and sobbing due to what had happened.

i feel that pranks can be funny however the limit can be easily broken between funny and spiteful which can lead to bad circumstance, also it has also been very common for pranks to go wrong which has led to people getting hurt. i feel that youtube has helped to encourage this however it had provided entertainment for audience.

New and digital media- cheater

The boy used social networking sites in order to meet his "girl friends", he used social networking to keep in contact with them as well as text messages in order to cover his foot prints. it was said he avoided apps like whats app as they allowed his time stamp to be seen and therefore his " girl friends were not able to see when he was last seen. although he had used social networking sites to meet them, the girls eventually felt that something was up and eventually found each other before telling them the data they had been going out. the boy was confronted at the airport where all three were waiting for him and it was said that after that "he ran back to his nana".

i think what he did was wrong however it was made possible with social networking and therefore he was able to balance them. i also feel that this shows the concerns of social networking and what can happen when situations are rushed but also finding someone from online should require more care and be taken slowly.

New and Digital media- Apple watch

concerns have grown over the apple watch which has lead to motoring society to attempt to ban the watch it had already been said anyone who use the watch will and can get the same pentally as someone using the phone, even if they check the time. if a accident is to occur and there is evidence that a driver was wearing and using the watch which has led to accident then the driver can face 2 years in jail. Also if caught using the watch a fine of up to £100 will be given and 3 points.

i feel that although the apple watch is new and can be seen as distracting other brands have already introduced the smart watch and has been round for a long time. i also feel that using a watch is as bad as using a phone and drivers should be careful what they use when driving. i also thing that possibly more concern has taken place against apple due to apple being popular and therefore may have more sales compared to other brands which could be the reason this article was released.

New and digital media- Google

https://gigaom.com/2014/01/02/no-larry-page-and-sergey-brin-are-not-to-blame-for-the-decline-of-the-media-industry/

why has Google led to a decline of the newspaper industry?

Google has been blamed for taking away advertisement  news paper away due to online website such as craigslist and Gumtree being able to advertise for a small fee or free, which had meant that many business have gone online as it target mass markets and is cheaper.

do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their job? why?

i believe although Google can be seen to be blamed i also believe that they have also helped in many ways, it had led to more competition between big businesses and small business as advertising have become more affordable but it also means prices are more competitive and therefore a benefit for customers.  Google has also led to journalist losing there jobs as many people post information about things going on in the world such as through blogger, social networking sites and also youtube which allows for user generated connect, this had therefore led to information be found out quicker but also can be seen as being honest compared to paid journalists for media institutions who can be seen as bias.

Jihadi John worked in the UK as a charity collector – and we’re closing in, says MI5

Jihadi John is thought to be behind the murders of journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley (pictured) (Picture: AP)
http://metro.co.uk/2014/09/09/jihadi-john-worked-in-the-uk-as-a-charity-collector-and-were-closing-in-says-mi5-4861366/

jihadhi john used yYouTubein order to to inform people about what he was doing , also MI5 claimed that they were tracking jihadhi john before he left the country and had suspicion about him however it was only considered a low level threat because he was believed to be making street collections .jihadhi john is believed to be responsible for the murders of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, was under surveillance when he was collecting for Arab charities based in London. This has led to more procedures and training being implemented ion order to prevent this in the future. over 3000 people are flying to iraq which means that actually trying to pinpoint threats can be very difficult.

i believe that its very difficult in order to be able to identify threat however more procedures should be put into place such as interviews in order to get visas but also all threat levels should be taken into consideration and not forgotten, although its a low threat it is still a threat which means that it can be dangerous for the UK and can have a large impact like this story did with the beheading of other journalists on YouTube. Video hosting websites should also censor videos more to ensure future prevention of videos like this being posted and becoming viral as this can convince other to the same and make it look okay but also in some way it can be considered that this behaviour is being promoted.
